Social Media Impact on Teenagers

Many teenagers now spend more time on the internet and the way teenagers use it, which is much more intense and intimate than kids younger than them or people older than them, really have a lot of impact to their developing personality, whether it’s positive or negative. Teenagers use social media to find a brand new community, to escape from real life, or just to play around. However, from just playing around to find a new world, social media is slowly becoming their world. They are constantly texting, tweeting, posting on social media and unfortunately, they don’t how to disconnect.

Teens spend more than one-third of their day on social media, nearly nine hours on average according to a new study from the family technology education non-profit group, Common Sense Media. That time used on social media can all lead to increased anxiety and lowering self-esteem on each teenagers. A survey conducted by the Royal Society for Public Health asked 14-24 year olds in the UK how social media platforms impacted their health and wellbeing. The survey results found that Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram all led to increased feelings of depression, anxiety, poor body image and loneliness.

Another impact social media has on teenagers is that they are far more comfortable on social media than they are on real life. A separate study by the National Citizen Service found that, rather than talking to their parents, girls seek comfort on social media when they are worried. That means that teenagers are really attached to the social media and is separating themself from their real, current world.

Talking on another aspect, social media can help teenagers find lots of new friend and that could be advantaging to some. But friendship formed online or by texts meaning that they are stripped of the most personal and intimidating aspects of communication. People communicating can’t see or hear the effect on other people because they aren’t having the conversation on real time. On chats, they can take their time to consider their response.

Some teens even said that phone calls are “scary” because it requires real direct communication between each party. If teens are  gonna act that way for much longer then they will grow up to be adults who are anxious about the aspects of communications between humans. If teens aren’t getting enough practice relating and communicating with people, surely they will have a hard time and riskier communications as they get older and began navigating the aspects of employment and romance.

Although social media has negative effects, it also has positive effects too depending on how you use it and how you split time between social media and real life. Extreme attachment on social media can even cause serious health problems. Teens think that being active on social media for popularity, or their friend is everything. But they just don’t see that their life is in front of their eyes, not in front of their screen.
